The Phil forces are joined once more by our long-term friends from Norwich’s twin city of Koblenz for an evening of choral and orchestral masterpieces. Mozart’s Mass in C, which became the favoured music for royal coronations at the Imperial court in Vienna, is full of fiery orchestral fanfares, sparkling choruses and bravura solo writing.
By contrast, the motet Insanae et vanae curae by Mozart’s friend and mentor Haydn is dark and dramatic as it ponders the folly of striving for worldly things while neglecting God.

Schubert’s Eighth Symphony has posed a conundrum to generations of music scholars for remaining unfinished, despite the composer living for six years after completing the first two movements. As a pioneer of Romantic symphonic form, it ranks alongside the greatest orchestral works of the early 19th century.

Berio’s ‘rendering’ of the sketches for Schubert’s uncompleted Tenth Symphony casts his genius in a striking new light.
