Alexander Ullman – piano
Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra
conducted by Matthew Andrews

In our February concert we feature one of the young soloists who has most impressed us in recent seasons, Alexander Ullman. We were lucky to engage him before he went on to win the Liszt International Piano Competition in 2017 and he has since played two Rachmaninov concertos with us – the 2nd and the 3rd. We also accompanied him in a special run-through of Liszt’s Piano Concertos 1 and 2 prior to his recording of those works with the BBC SO released in 2022. This time he plays another mighty Russian piano concerto, Prokofiev’s 3rd, a work that calls for extraordinary fireworks and drama from piano and orchestra alike.

The other main work is Rachmaninov’s youthful First Symphony. Although it’s been eclipsed by his later symphonies, older listeners will recognise its final movement, used as the theme tune for BBC Panorama programme in the 1960s. Like all Rachmaninov, a wonderful work to listen to and enjoy.
Glink’s sparkling Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila opens the concert.
